Review: Shaka Zulu Camden
Shaka Zulu Camden is not the regular run of the mill eatery, I mean, not only is it enormous; how many other London restaurants do you know that can easily fit two escalators inside? But more worth a mention is the fact that the menu could be mistaken for a food challenge from I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here with dishes like Crocodile Cigars, Zebra and Springbok on the cards.
Shaka Zulu is a design masterpiece, this split level carved oasis lined with Zulu warrior statues has the capacity to hold 850 diners with fully equipped kitchens on both levels delivering a uniquely exciting South African menu that includes Zambian game meat options like ostrich, crocodile, zebra and springbok. Not for the faint hearted, I must say.
After a moment to bring me back to reality... and the UK more specifically, we finally decided on the Crocodile cigars and Shaka Zulu smoked salmon for starters. I must say initially I was apprehensive about tasting the crocodile, but I was very pleasantly surprised and ordered a highly recommended shark alley cocktail whilst my dining companion sampled the chilli cocktail for our accomplishments.
Being a lover of sea bass, of course I had to opt for it as my main course and my choice was spot on. The sea bass was delicious; tender and flavoursome, complimented well with my side order of mash. Warning: beware of the bones, nothing would ruin the dining experience quicker than an impromptu trip to the local hospital.
Shaka Zulu is a must, I will definitely be returning for more sea bass. The dim lighting and opulent decor is a total contrast to the stables market that houses Shaka Zulu so perfectly. Having recently introduced their Essence of Africa Menu for £29.95 per person, there is no real excuse not to try the place out.
