Behind the Screen


The summer is officially here, believe it or not. This month we have a collection of events to get your creative juices flowing. Most people have always dreamed of a career in movies, well if you can't get a stint as an extra on Eastenders (the prerequisites are pretty high don't you know), then the next best thing is grabbing your brolley and heading down to Somerset House in London, where BAFTA and Film4 are hosting 'Behind The Screen', giving the inner thespian in you the chance to shine alongside famous directors, writers and industry executives.

Prison Movies and the reality of life inside

Mon 3rd August 18.30: With the classic feel-good jail tale The Shawshank Redemption as the backdrop, author and Hollywood screenwriter Ronan Bennett talks to writer and former life prisoner Erwin James who became a Guardian columnist whilst still inside about the merits of prison as depicted on the big screen.

Thu 6 Aug, 18.30: A selection of BAFTA-nominated and winning short films plus Q&A with Osbert Parker, tasters of some of the best BAFTA-nominated shorts from the last few years with your chance here twice nominated animator Osbert Parker talk about his vivid work.

Film4's Cinema Extreme Shorts

Fri 7 Aug, 18.30: One of the UK's most innovative short-film schemes returns with a new line-up of bold and challenging work. A rare chance to see all four of the 2009 titles together in one programme, including the debut short by multi-screen video installation artists Jane and Louise Wilson. Join us today to discover the essential filmmakers of tomorrow.
