While other golf and mock country estates aspire to the grand country pile feel, Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire is definitely the real deal. Driving up to the Hall you almost expect to be greeted by Jane Austen herself. The sprawling 543 acre estate provides a picture postcard setting with lush mature parkland surrounding Broadwater Lake and the idyllic setting for the Melbourne Golf Course.

The stately home is a perfect luxury retreat for those wanting that lord of the manor experience in the country. There's a fair bit of history to the place as you would expect from a location that has housed the likes of previous Prime Ministers Lord Palmerston and Lord Melbourne. The current hall was built in 1760 but the first hall on the site dates back to 1239. There's a croquet lawn, a snooker room and dinner in the Grand Ballroom is certainly a lavish experience.

Brocket Hall has two excellent championship style golf courses. The Melbourne is a fabulously scenic course where the River Lea and the Broadwater are a permanent aesthetically pleasing distraction. The Palmerston course is a very testing and longish par 73, but a really nice and enjoyable course to play. There's some lovely scenery to take in on your round with an array of impressive looking trees and foliage including pines, hornbeams and oaks.

Additionally there are some great facilities from the putting greens near the first holes on both courses and a good grass driving range, continually stocked with practice balls. There's also the Palmerston Golf Academy for beginners or those looking to improve their swing.

The estate has a Michelin Star restaurant, Auberge du Lac, for fine dining in elegant surroundings.

A short train ride and taxi means that you can arrive to this oasis from London in around 45 minutes.
