If you believe that an autocratic society would be virtually impossible in the 2008, the The Wave should be a priority on your list of must see films.
Based on the highly successful novel by Tod Strasser, Denis Gansel takes the story of The Wave, or 'Die Welle' and moves it from it's original location of Pal Alto to Germany in this story that shows the damage that can be done when individuality is removed.

The story of The Wave takes place during class project week, when all the teachers are assigned specific topics to teach their students for that week. The popular

and unconventional swimming teacher, Mr Rainer Wenger (Jrgen Vogel) is given the topic 'Autocratic' and as neither he nor the students are enthused by the topic, he decides to try a new with a way to teach the topic that makes things more interesting for his students; thus the forming of 'The Wave'.
Mr Wenger takes an ordinary school with ordinary kids (all bar one) and turns it into a dictatorship as he attempts to teach his students about autocracy and living under a capitalist society.
By the end of the week the school has turned upside down as the members of 'The Wave' and their rules begin to spread outside the classroom and into the city as symbols of 'the wave' begin to appear everywhere and The Wave's signature white shirt uniform begins to spread outside of the school. The only student to stand up against the values of The Wave is Karo (Jennifer Ulrich), normally the most popular girl in the school who is quickly pushed into the shadows and ostracised from the rest of the class.
The Wave is an excellent film, it's thought provoking and gains momentum continuously without. This month CFM focuses on foreign films, so dust off your reading glasses and go.
