Directed by Joel Conroy, 'Waveriders' is a documentary that follows the surfing phenomenon across the seas, beginning with George Freeth in Hawaii, taking us from sunny California to Ireland where it finally lets us off with the world renowned Malloy brothers who return to their roots for some major wave riding.
I'll be the first to admit that initially I was none too thrilled at the prospect of spending an hour and twenty minutes watching the ins and outs of surfing, however I was pleasantly surprised with 'Waveriders'.
The movie puts surfing into context against the poetic backdrop of the awesome natural world. Visually, it is outstanding. Winner of the Dublin Film Festival Audience Award, 'Waveriders' was released in cinemas around UK on the 3rd April, this film is beautiful, not to everyone's taste I'd hasten to add, but I'd describe it simply as... poetry in motion.
