It's just minutes before 9.30 PM this Saturday evening in Hammersmith and the spotlights are flickering madly upon the red stage curtain as the crowd chants and pleads 'FLORENCE' over and over again... everyone desperate for their favorite fierce and fiery red-head to show herself once and for all. Moments later, Welch emerged on stage looking her gypsy best and the crowd's already immense energy continued to burst into the air.
For her last gig on her UK tour, Florence absolutely killed it and proved herself to be an entirely captivating performer. Playing track after track from her critically acclaimed debut album, 'Lungs', a barefoot Welch was possessed by her own hauntingly poetic music. The level of power in her voice was unreal as the crowd stood amazed, cheering on their girl as she powered through her set.
At first it appeared that the Machine peaked with a rambunctiously energetic take on 'Drumming Song', but it was towards the end of the show that entirely cemented that this life was the life that Welch was born to lead. 'You've Got the Love' had the crowd happily singing along, while 'Dog Days are Over' merely continued the extreme energy within the Apollo. The night was capped off with an encore featuring 'Kiss with a Fist', and a fist pumping audience chanting 'Raise it Up!' as the lady of the night belted out 'Rabbit Heart'.
Summing up the night, Welch reflected on her UK tour, citing it as 'immense and intense', and truer words couldn't paint a clearer truth. Here is a woman who proves she has something special in recorded format, but truly comes alive on stage. There is a presence within her unlike anything else, and it becomes clear very quickly why tickets for Florence and the Machine gigs sell out in mere moments. Electrifying, magnetic, and seemingly perfect; the girl has it all and she gives it all back over and over again; Florence and the Machine truly are a sight to see.
