Named after her mother's love for Jazz music, Missy Elliot's protege, Jazmine Sullivan is one of the newer ladies to the R&B scene, but after being nominated for 5 awards at the 2009 Grammy's, and offering more than the usual generic R&B as well as some writing credits under her belt (Christina Milian, Fantasia), Jazmine is a triple threat with her good looks, great vocals and song writing talent.
Born in Philadelphia, Jazmine began singing in her local gospel choir at the age of 5 or 6 and was the youngest member to go on to sing in the adult choir. A meeting with soul legend, Stevie Wonder (she sung for him when she was 13 years old) caused enough buzz for her to get a face to face sit down with J Records' Clive Davis and the rest is history.
'Fearless' is the debut album from the 21 year old whose vocals seem way older than her tender years, the album was released stateside to much acclaim and peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 charts.
'Fearless' shows a diverse range of musical styles, therefore it is pointless trying to define Ms Sullivan's musically genre as she jumps from the classically orchestrated "Bust the Windows" to a reggae inspired "Need you Bad" and pop club bangers such as "Dream Big" which has Jazmine prophesising her destiny as she sings; "I gotta dream big, coz when it happens its gon' happen real quick". Jazmine Sullivan is not an artist to hide behind heavily produced tracks, what you see is what you get as she gives us her talent laid bare in tracks like "Lions, Tigers, and Bears" which could easily be an acappella and still be as strong a track as it is.
On the whole, 'Fearless' is a fantastic debut from Sullivan, released on J Records.
