If you make the pilgrimage to the 'home of golf' in the east coast town of St Andrews, you really must play the superb Kingsbarns golf course. The links course is brilliantly designed, immaculately maintained and with gorgeous sea views on every hole, it really is a delightful golfing experience. You might have seen the course featured on the annual Alfred Dunhill Links Championship which sees the top pros competing with a host of celebrities.

Opened in 2000 the course is still relatively a baby when it comes to golf courses in Scotland but has already built up a reputation for being one of the finest new golf courses in the world. And it's easy to see why. Teeing off on the elevated tees you get a great view of the task in hand. There's a good variety of interesting layouts for different holes. The fairways are very lush and all the greens in tip top condition. Although it is a challenging course there are not too many daunting holes making most holes inviting rather than perilous.

The greens really provide a stern test of a player's short game whether chipping, putting or playing a bump and run, but above all else it is the magnificent views of the sea that makes Kingsbarns stand out so much visually and make it a joy to behold and play on. It's just a fun course to play. The clubhouse has an old world charm about it and is a perfect place to grab some lunch or relax. The upstairs lounge area offers great views over the course.

I stayed at the excellent Fairmont hotel in St Andrews which offered a high level of hospitality and personal service. The Squire Restaurant offers decent brasserie dining, while the afternoon teas served in the Atrium with delicious scones and cakes is highly recommended. For a fantastic panoramic view the Clubhouse restaurant looking over the course and the sea is perfect for a snack, or sinking a post round cold one.

Fairmont has two courses attached to it, the Torrance and the Kittocks. The Torrance is a links championship course that this year will host the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Senior Open. A good tip if you are going to St Andrews is to pay a trip to the famous Old Course on Sunday when the course is closed and accessible to the public.
