The Long and Short of It

This month our resident Men's Fashion writer Charleen French asks.... Do You Dare To Bare?

The summer always brings us ice-cream, beer gardens and festivals, but more importantly, the difficult task of maintaining the smarts without the sweats. With so many options available, from linen trousers to cargo pants or lightweight jeans. It's no wonder so many men often dread dressing for the warmer climate.

This season the catwalks of SS10 were awash with choices to keep the style conscious gent looking super-cool in the heat. From simple adjustments on modern classics like the waistcoats seen at Moschino to more daring additions such as the wedges (for men) showcased at Fendi.
One of the most noticeable trends though, was the rise of the bare leg, yes that's right; I'm talking about shorts.

Whilst some recoil in horror, at the thought of possibly looking like an adult version of Little Lord Fauntleroy, others embrace the introduction of the 'Smart Short' as a key look for spring/summer.

Pastel hues teemed with sheer shirts and smart jackets were seen on the catwalks of Hugo Boss (see above). For those willing to go that extra mile the introduction of what I like to call 'Man Glads' was also prevalent, but a deck shoe or converse would be a safer choice for the less adventurous. On the runway at D&G (see right) we were also given shorts in bold checked fabrics, matched with denim. Or for those who like to stand out... even more check.

Don't despair or attempt to mortgage your house for a pair though, the High Street have been quick to jump onto the 'Smart Short' trend, so if you do 'dare to bare' you will certainly not be short of affordable choices.

One of my favourite online retailers, ASOS, have some great options. They are fantastic at keeping up with the trends, and lucky for you, these beauties are just in:

The lightweight Oxford Shorts With Check Waistband

A great choice to wear both smart and casual. Team with either a plain t-shirt for day or dress up with a smart light-coloured jacket for the evening. These shorts are available in both blue and pink and cost £28.00.

The Bold Check Short

The more daring should try the bold check short. They are 100% cotton and are bang-on-trend. Wear with a simple white T-shirt or a loose fitting shirt for a smarter look, priced at £25.00.

Both available from www.asos.com
