The Pope of Fashion

In the beginning

France's richest man, Bernard Arnault, is Chairman of LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton). In most fashionista circles, Arnault is known as the Pope of Fashion, a very appropriate nickname due to his liaisons with the world's leading luxury products companies, but Arnault's name wasn't always on the tips of tongues when people talked about those who influence the fashion world.

Born in Roubiax, France, Bernard Arnault attended the Roubiax Lycee and Faidherbe Lycee in Lille before graduating from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1971. Arnault's first professional job was as an engineer for the Ferret-Savinel construction company he went on to serve the company as its President from 1978-1984.

In 1984, Arnault left Ferret-Savinel and moved on to a position at the Financiere Apache Holding Company. Arnault reorganized the holding company and returned the group to a profitable status. Arnault then began his ultimate strategy: developing the world's leading luxury products company. During this reorganization, he revitalized Christian Dior, which became the top company for the new organization.

Since 1989, Arnault has been steadily accomplishing his goals. He assumed control of LVMH - Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton whose luxury goods are now top brands worldwide. Arnault went on to become both Chairman and CEO of the company. He serves as President of the Board of Directors of Group Arnault, SA (the family holding company) and Christian Dior, SA. He is also a Director of the Cheval Blanc vineyard, M6 and Lagardere Group.

Family Ties and Other Interests

Bernard Arnault is a married father of five children. He is also a distinguished classical pianist and avid tennis player. Arnault's interest in the field of contemporary art has made him an acknowledged pro in this field.

In 2006 the establishment of the Louis Vuitton Foundation took Arnault down another path. The cornerstone of this project is a Frank Gehry designed arts center in Paris, France due to be finished in 2010. The cost of the project has been estimated at %uFFFD70 million. The arts center will house permanent and temporary exhibitions of contemporary and classical arts.

Online website www.e-architect.co.uk described the building concept as "an amorphous glazed museum." But then again, haven't Frank Gehry's designs always been controversial? In 2006, Bernard Arnault said, "...(the project's) aim (is) to underline French creativity in the world."

Worldwide Influence

Far beyond the world of fashion and business, Arnault's influence is felt around the world. He is a close friend of French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, and the proud owner of a few business newspapers. In 2007, Mr. Arnault was appointed Commander of the Legion of Honor for his invaluable services to the French nation and people; he is also a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Beyond the engaging smile and easy manner, Bernard Arnault, 'The Pope of Fashion', leads the way to innovation and creativity in both business and the arts; not bad for France's richest man.
