The Smell of Autumn in the Air

As the weather turns cooler and we pull the jumpers and woollen scarves out of storage, it's nice to have a new fragrance to wrap around ourselves and pull our spirits up ready to face the cold weather and short days ahead.

A few new fragrances have crossed the Crumbs for Men desk in recent weeks. We take a look at these new entries into the crowded men's fragrance market.

Bravado

Baxter of California, a men's grooming line created in 1965, have introduced two new fragrances, Bravado 2 and Bravado 3, to their line of men's products. The original Bravado fragrance was launched in the early 70's by company founder Baxter Finley. After selling well for years, it was retired about 7 years ago.

Bravado 2 has top notes of citrus and when first applied has a very fresh, lemony smell to it. As it settles down other notes of musk and cypress emerge. However it is the light floral middle notes which don't quite work. The fragrance borders on the 'unisex', one person I asked said it smelled like "old lady soap".

Bravado 3 smells fresh and clean, right out of the bottle with a mandarin/citrus top note. Again there is a white floral lavender middle note and a woody musk base note which give it a soapy floral smell, I couldn't wait to wash it off. While the packaging is attractive, I wouldn't recommend either of them unless you were looking to share a fragrance with your girlfriend (or Nan).

Aqua de Colonia Concentrada

Produced by Alvarez Gomez; Madrid's oldest and most prestigious perfumery. They are a Spanish family-owned business that dates back to 1899. With a heavily artisanal focus, they use quality raw ingredients and make cosmetics, elixirs and perfumes sold under their own brand.

Aqua de Colonia Concentrada was launched in 1912. It is a light fragrance with a lemon zing; fresh, with hints of herbs, it draws upon a carefully chosen blend of Mediterranean plants, flowers and fruits. Using Spanish lavender, lemon, geranium, eucalyptus and essential oils of rosemary, thyme, English lavender and bergamot, it is a fragrance that could be worn by anyone of any age.

The scent doesn't linger for too long and smells of quality ingredients. It perhaps isn't heavy enough for cold winter, when you want rich complicated smells to surround you, but it is a pleasant, light fragrance which doesn't hang around all day, but quietly slips into the background.
